Paraquat dichloride 24% SL is a non-selective, contact herbicide that controls a broad range of weeds by rapidly damaging plant cell membranes. It is absorbed through foliage, acts within minutes to desiccate weeds, and is rainfast, but it also binds to soil to become inactive, reducing residue. This formulation is used in pre-plant applications and as a post-emergence directed spray in crops like tea, grapes, and cotton, and also for pre-harvest desiccation. However, due to its high toxicity, strict safety measures are essential, and it is classified as a restricted-use herbicide.
Mechanism of Action
Contact Herbicide: Paraquat acts on contact with plant foliage, causing rapid burn-down and necrosis.
Oxidative Damage: It works by generating superoxide radicals during photosynthesis, which directly damage cell membranes and cytoplasm.
Rainfast & Soil Inactivation: Once applied, it quickly becomes rainfast, meaning rain won't reduce its effectiveness. It is also quickly inactivated upon contact with soil, minimizing soil residue.
